There is an art to just about everything, and when you’re talking about books, and artists’ books specifically, there is just as much art in the finer details as there is in the caring craftsmanship of the thing itself.

Based in Fitzroy, Melbourne, Moor Press is the brainchild of artist Jesse Dyer. Dyer — whose own artistic practice combines individual media forms (such as video, photo, and text) in interactive, web-based artworks — learned bookmaking at Ancora Press (Monash University) while studying for his BFA.

Artist bookbinder and printer Dyer opened his own press earlier this year, where the focus is on individualised, small-run publications.

Books by Moor Press are crafted, and thoughtfully at that. You can tell that they are created with care, and by a maker who not only has a deft understanding of his own work, but also of what other creatives need and want.

Art by artists for artists is what Moor Press is, fundamentally. But as well as that, it is a well-made range of beautifully considered pieces that anyone in need of a book — be it for note taking, art making, or chronicling— can appreciate.

All of Moor Press’ creations are made by hand in Melbourne using paper certified archival to the standard of the National Archive of Australia, although projects can be tailored using a wide variety of other papers, upon request.

As well as their codex and perfect bound, hard and softcover notebooks and sketchbooks, Moor Press also create custom books, and solander boxes to order.

You can find more about Moor Press on the website, and shop their wares online, here, and at Craft. You can also keep up with all the latest Moor Press news on Instagram.
